Thermory® Kodiak Spruce Cladding Brings Texture to Buchanan’s Native Plants
Buchanan’s Native Plants in Houston’s historic Heights district has always celebrated the beauty of the outdoors—and now, that same beauty extends to their built environment. Brett Zamore Design served as the architect and visionary behind this update, creating a design that feels at home in the surrounding community while elevating the customer experience.
With it’s steel sructure and Thermory Spruce cladding, the Buchanan’s Barn reinterprets the traditional barn to reflect the nursery’s unique character. The barn’s natural wood siding grounds the building with purpose while blending seamlessly into its Houston Heights neigborbood. – Brett Zamore, Owner of Brett Zamore Design
To bring that vision to life, Brett Zamore Design collaborated with Long Term Builders, LLC and Mason’s Mill & Lumber to create a warm, rugged material palette that ties seamlessly into Buchanan’s mission.
For this project, Mason’s Mill supplied Thermory® Kodiak Spruce 1×8 C15 cladding, a thermally modified softwood that offers both rich character and long-term durability. Designed with a bold, rustic texture and enhanced stability through heat and steam—not chemicals—Thermory® Kodiak Spruce is a standout choice for commercial spaces that demand performance with a natural look. This product also comes with a 25 year warranty hammering home its long lasting durability and performance.
Long Term Builders, LLC handled the entire install and took the project one step further by oiling the cladding on site using Cutek Extreme in Smokey Gray. The oiling process brought out the dramatic grain variation in the spruce while providing added protection against moisture and UV exposure. The result is a finished look that feels organic, durable, and perfectly aligned with the spirit of Buchanan’s.
I think the feel of the Thermory® Kodiak Spruce really fits with our store. It brings a natural element into a space that’s all about promoting and fostering nature. We also really like how durable it is—it’s stronger than regular lumber. – Zach Buchanan, Owner of Buchanan’s Native Plants
Thermory® Kodiak Spruce is known for its rustic appeal, dimensional stability, and resistance to rot and decay—all thanks to its chemical-free thermal modification process. It’s a versatile solution for commercial environments where aesthetics matter just as much as performance. With on-site oiling using Cutek Extreme, builders can easily adjust the finish tone while protecting the wood for the long haul.
