Superior alder also known as select alder or clear alder, is a high-grade hardwood that produces a clearer stock than its close relative knotty alder. Alder, part of the birch family, is a softer hardwood from the Pacific Northwest.
Consistent color, stability, and uniform acceptance of stains and finishes are some of the characteristics that have made western alder a preferred wood for furniture. Its elasticity makes it ideal for carving intricate details. Ranking second only to oak as the most commonly used wood, alder offers the look of many fine hardwoods at a value price.

All of our antique pine comes from reclaimed lumber and has a natural patina look, saw marks, knots, nail holes and that distinct rustic feel. The sapwood varies in width, and is whitish to yellowish, orange white or pale yellow. The heartwood is light yellow, orange or reddish-brown, and is resinous. The marked contrast between early wood and late wood is clearly shown in the growth rings.
All “reclaimed” or antique pine comes with defects and character markings present. Every piece of lumber has a history.

In rustic or knotty grades of lumber, there will be a percentage of degrade during the milling process. Some knots may shake lose and/or fall out during the milling process. Mason’s Mill is not liable for these defects in moldings produced from knotty grades of lumber.
Regarded as excellent in resistance to both decay and insect attack, aromatic red cedar is frequently used for fence posts used in direct ground contact with no pre-treating of the wood.
Overall, aromatic red cedar is easy to work, notwithstanding any knots or irregularities present in the wood. It reportedly has a high silica content, which can dull cutters. Aromatic red cedar glues and finishes well, though in many applications, the wood is left unfinished to preserve its aromatic properties.
Cedar has a distinct and tell-tale scent: the wood is commonly used in closets and chests to repel moths and other insects. Though eastern red cedar trees are widely distributed throughout the eastern half of the United States, it is a very slow-growing species, and most trees harvested tend to be fairly small in diameter. Because of this, aromatic red cedar boards tend to be knotty and narrow.

Mason’s Mill and Lumber will not be responsible or issue a credit for any cup, warp, twist or splitting that occurs in any custom cut Fir or Cedar boards or beams. These issues can be present in material cut from larger beams and timbers and need to be accounted for by the buyer when determining if Fir or Cedar is appropriate for the intended application. Cedar and Fir products will typically have knots.
Ash is regularly used for furniture, flooring, doors, architectural millwork and moulding, kitchen cabinets, paneling, tool handles, baseball bats, hockey sticks, skis, oars and turnings. The sapwood is light-colored to nearly white and the heartwood varies from greyish or light brown, to pale yellow streaked with brown. The wood is generally straight-grained with a coarse uniform texture.
The degree and availability of light-colored sapwood, and other properties, will vary according to the growing regions.

Character white oak has an open grain and can range from light gray to warm brown shades. White oak is a hard and heavy wood with a medium-bending and crushing strength, low in stiffness, but very good in steam-bending. It has great wear-resistance.
Known for its natural grain irregularities, mineral streaks, and both sound and open knots, character grade lumber contains a mix of heart and sap woods. Its color variations are visible throughout each board face.

A select & better grade cherry hardwood out of Pennsylvania that is extremely popular with cabinetmakers. Cherry is easy to work, fine textured, strong and fairly durable. Highly rated in all working properties including wood bending and turning.
Cherry becomes darker and richer with age turning reddish brown with a golden luster. Freshly cut cherry is often very pale, but the wood oxidizes to its famously favorable rich brown red in time.
