The Craftsman and Arts & Crafts movement reshaped American homes from roughly 1900 to 1930, rejecting Victorian ornament in favor of honest joinery, exposed structure, and quiet horizontal lines. Craftsman moulding is restrained and rectilinear — flat-stock casings with simple back-band trim, wide picture rails, plate rails, deep door headers, and beam-style ceiling trim meant to be read clearly from across the room. Surfaced 3 sides, two smooth faces and one straight edge for optimal lumber yield. An S&B grade in soft maple, it is commonly referred to as silver maple, red maple and box elder. The sapwood in the soft maples is considerably wider than in the hard maples and has a lighter heartwood color. Stains well and may be polished to an excellent finish, typical uses for soft maple include domestic flooring, furniture, millwork, piano parts and sporting goods.
