Browse by Architectural Moulding Style: A New Way to Explore Our 8,000+ Profile Catalog

For architects and builders specifying authentic historical millwork, the hardest part has never been knowing what you want — it’s finding it. A Greek Revival entablature, a proper Federal-period chair rail, an Italianate bracket profile: the references live in pattern books and field measurements, but the search has always meant scrolling through hundreds of unlabeled profiles hoping a number matches a memory. We just changed that.

Mason’s Mill & Lumber has reorganized our custom moulding profile library by Architectural style. a number of our 8,000+ profiles has been catalogued into the architectural period it belongs to, so you can now shop by era — Greek Revival, Federal & Adam, Georgian, Victorian & Eastlake, Italianate, Craftsman & Arts & Crafts, Colonial Revival, Art Deco & Modern, Beadboard & Wainscoting, and Classical Details — and see only the profiles that fit the project in front of you.

Why we built shop-by-style

masons mill teammate holding a custom profile

We’ve been milling custom moulding profiles since 1989. In that time we’ve made knives for restoration architects working on National Register properties, builders matching a single broken piece in a 1908 Craftsman bungalow, and designers recreating profiles from a photograph the homeowner brought back from a trip. The common thread: everyone arrives knowing the style they need before they know the profile number.

Shop-by-style is built around that reality. Instead of asking you to translate your design intent into a part number, it lets you start with the architectural language you already speak.

Built for the way specifiers actually work

  • For restoration architects: Filter immediately to the period of the structure. No more cross-referencing modern profile catalogs against historical references.
  • For high-end builders: Pull a complete period-correct trim package — base, casing, chair rail, crown — from one curated set instead of hunting across the whole library.
  • For interior designers: Specify mouldings that read as authentic to the architecture, not generically “traditional.”

Browse the ten historical styles

Each style page shows every Mason’s Mill profile in that category, ready to spec, sample, or run.

The original profile library is still here

Shop-by-style is an addition, not a replacement. If you already know the profile number, or you’re working from a Mason’s Mill quote, the full searchable profile library works exactly as it always has. Search by number, dimension, or keyword and pull up any of our 8,000+ profiles in seconds.

The two approaches complement each other: browse by style when you’re specifying a project, search the library when you know the part.

Can’t find the profile you need? We’ll mill it.

Eight thousand profiles is a deep library, but historical architecture is deeper. If you’re matching a one-of-a-kind profile from a 1790 farmhouse, working from a hand sketch, or designing something that’s never been milled before, we make it. Custom knife grinding is core to what we do — not an exception.

Send us any of the following and we’ll engineer a profile to match:

  • A physical sample, even a broken piece
  • A hand-drawn or CAD profile drawing
  • A clear photograph with at least one known dimension
  • A reference from a pattern book (Asher Benjamin, Minard Lafever, the Palliser brothers — we’ve worked from all of them)

We grind the custom knife, run a sample for your approval, and mill in any species we stock — including poplar, pine, white oak, sapele, mahogany, and reclaimed material on request. Lead times on custom knives are typically 2–3 weeks; once the knife exists, that profile is part of your project library permanently and can be re-run anytime.

Milling profiles since 1989

Mason’s Mill & Lumber has been a custom moulding shop from day one. We aren’t a distributor with a catalog of stock items — we’re a mill, and the profile library you’re searching is the accumulated archive of more than three decades of knives we’ve ground for real projects. When you spec a profile here, you’re specifying something that was already proven on a job site somewhere, by someone whose work you’d probably recognize.

That archive — and the people who know it — is what shop-by-style is really exposing. The reorganization is the surface change. The depth underneath is thirty-seven years of historical millwork.

Questions architects and designers ask us

How accurate are the historical style categories? Each of our 8,000+ profiles was reviewed and assigned to a category based on its dominant design language — silhouette, ornament vocabulary, proportion, and the period of architecture it was originally milled for. Some profiles span more than one style; in those cases we tagged them to the era they’re most commonly specified into.

Can I get a sample before I commit to a run? Yes. Samples are available on virtually any profile in the library, in your specified species. Contact us with the profile number and species and we’ll get a short sample run out to you.

What’s the minimum order for a custom profile? Minimums depend on the species and the complexity of the knife, but we routinely run custom profiles for single-room restorations. Reach out with your linear footage and species and we’ll quote it.

Do you ship nationally? Yes. Mason’s Mill ships custom moulding profiles to architects, builders, and designers across the country. Crating and freight are quoted per project.
