Thermally Modified Woods

Longevity, Durability, and Stability

What is Thermally Modified Wood

Wood has been a cornerstone of construction throughout human history. While its versatility is unmatched, natural wood is susceptible to environmental challenges, especially in exterior settings.

To enhance its performance, various modification techniques have been developed. Among these, thermal modification stands out for its ability to improve wood’s durability and stability without the use of chemicals.

Benefits of Thermally Modified Wood

Thermal modification improves the wood’s stability and performance by significantly reducing its moisture content, often by as much as 60%. This process alters the cellular structure of the wood, delivering key benefits such as:

The risk of fungal attack is greatly reduced because thermally modified wood no longer contains sufficient nutrients for mold and insects.

Thermally modified wood is less susceptible to cupping and warping with changes in relative humidity and weather. The boards are straight, true, and ready to use.

Thermally modified wood will have darker through-color tones. Color will vary with cook temperatures and species. Like standard wood, thermally modified wood, if left untreated, will turn a weathered gray color over time.

Thermally modified wood is versatile, making it ideal for a wide range of interior and exterior applications, including siding, rain screens, facades, decking, trim, millwork, furniture, and even instruments. Its enhanced stability and performance have made it a preferred material for architects, designers, contractors, and craftsmen. The thermal modification process alters the entire board, allowing it to be cut, ripped, planed, sanded, and worked just like traditional wood. Both hardwood and softwood species can undergo this process. At Arbor Wood, we specialize in thermally modifying American White Ash and Southern Yellow Pine, while actively testing new species to expand our offerings.
